Nella collana “China and the World” non poteva mancare un volume su Matteo Ricci. La sua storia ha il gusto di un romanzo di avventure, ma è documentata da dettagliate ed attendibili fonti storiche, quindi è un’affascinante storia vera.
Grazie alle sue doti diplomatiche, alla sua conoscenza delle scienze occidentali, alla sua insaziabile curiosità, al suo talento nelle lingue e alla sua fede, Matteo Ricci, gesuita italiano, riuscì a penetrare fin nelle stanze private del grande e proibito impero cinese di epoca Ming, là dove nessuno straniero era stato mai ammesso. Dopo lunghi anni trascorsi in varie zone della Cina, egli ebbe il permesso di stabilirsi a Pechino alla corte dell’imperatore Wan Li dove poté intrattenere un pionieristico scambio culturale e scientifico con gli intellettuali di corte. Fu talmente stimato a corte che, dopo la sua morte, fu deciso di dargli sepoltura in territorio cinese, come mai era stato fatto per uno straniero che non fosse un diplomatico.
